Role summary, Account Executive
Media Relations Account Executive must have 2-3+ years of work experience in public relations, public affairs, or media relations. The Media Relations Account Executive will assist with media research and outreach, presentations, and project coordination; build media lists and databases; and compile client reports. They will join a small but fast-growing team and manage daily client deliverables around media, communications, government relations, and community relations. The Media Relations Account Executive will manage the day-to-day execution of client deliverables and support the development of strategy. This individual’s primary responsibility will be producing and managing deliverables for the firm’s clients.
The ideal candidate will have some experience with large-scale initiatives/projects/announcements/events that have a government and/or community relations overlay.
Primary Responsibilities
- Writing: Draft op-eds, blog posts, speeches, and memos on policy topics and political issues. Must be able to write and quickly.
- Research: Produce memos explaining substantive public policy issues. Collect background material on potential clients, reporters and news outlets, and current events. Contribute research to inform speechwriting and messaging development. Should be able to analyze and distill complex topics with an eye for the colorful details that make for good storytelling. Closely follow industry trends, relevant public policy developments, and political news.
- Client relations: Support THI clients as needed and help cultivate THI’s relationships with our external partners.
- Operations: Provide administrative support, coordinate work across multiple projects including scheduling for senior team members, manage various organizational processes and deadlines, and oversee interns. Create and build media distribution lists for media outreach (i.e., MuckRack, Google). Assist with event check-in, press pen, escorting talent, and general needs of event staff during client events.
- Pitching stories: Conduct strategic and thorough media outreach to land stories for our clients; develop creative hooks to capture reporters’ interests, understand each reporter’s audience, distribute press releases and media advisories; follow up with media to verify contact information, pitch status.
- Ensure senior management is kept fully informed regarding the progress of client plans
Essential skills:
- 2-3+ years of media relations experience required – please do not apply if you have not worked in media relations. It can be for a PR firm or in-house, but this is mandatory.
- Positive attitude and ability to work flexibly and collaboratively in a virtual work environment.
- Able to synthesize information into a concise format
- Able to take verbal direction quickly and accurately
- Be news savvy and up-to-date on current events with a strong news sense and knowledge of the media, particularly around creating hooks to land stories
- Multi-tasks easily & has the ability to handle multiple assignments at once, works quickly, and meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment while paying close attention to details.
- Strong written and oral communications skills
- Technically fluent with tools such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
- Understands organizing and advocacy communications, including social media campaigning and local, state, or national politics.

Role summary, Public Affairs Associate
The Public Affairs Associate must have 2-3+ years of work experience in public affairs with proven and existing relationships at both the NYC or NYS levels. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment and is enthusiastic about growing in this position. They must be able to prioritize and manage their time while handling multiple projects simultaneously without sacrificing attention to detail.
Candidates must be able to work collaboratively with the firm’s leadership and staff to promote a respectful and inclusive environment that emphasizes cooperation and teamwork. In addition, they must be respectful of the perspectives of others and possess sound judgment. The perfect candidate is a fast learner who possesses excellent verbal and written communications skills, and interpersonal skills, and has a strong interest in New York City, state & federal government, and politics. Candidates with experience working and/or interning in the office of an elected official or a political campaign are highly preferred.

Role summary, Account Executive
The Account Executive must have 2-5 years of work experience in media relations and public affairs.
This individual’s primary responsibility will be producing and managing deliverables for the firm’s clients. In addition, as needed, they will support the Senior Vice President and President on business development needs (this will account for 15-20 percent of the candidate’s time), including writing proposals and preparing pitch presentations for prospective clients, and representing the firm at industry conferences and business/networking events.
The ideal candidate will also have some experience with executing large-scale initiatives/projects/announcements/events/press conferences that have a government and/or community relations component.
Primary Responsibilities
- Ensure senior leadership is kept fully informed regarding the progress of client deliverables.
- Monitoring current events and news, with a focus on tracking news of relevance to our clients.
- Draft op-eds, blog posts, speeches, press releases, media advisories, proposals, pitch decks, and memos. Must be able to write clearly, concisely and quickly.
- Research background material on potential clients, reporters and news outlets, and current events. Contribute research to inform speechwriting and messaging development for clients. About The THI Internship Program:
The Hayes Initiative is seeking highly motivated college-level intern(s) (juniors, seniors, and graduate students) interested in getting hands-on public affairs experience focusing on communications, government relations, and stakeholder management. We will help teach our interns the skills needed to succeed in this fast-paced industry. Interns will be asked to focus on a range of projects, including longer-term and day-to-day/immediate tasks. They will learn the basics of high-level communications strategizing, writing, pitching media, and advocacy. Our internship program runs for three months with an option to extend based on performance.
THI Intern role summary:
Primary Responsibilities
- As a small boutique firm with an ever-expanding roster of blue-chip clients, THI Interns will be assigned to work with specific project leads and will collaborate with other team members as needed.
- Interns will conduct, synthesize, and analyze research with their project lead to develop actionable conclusions and insights for our clients.
- Interns will participate in client calls and presentations and assist with client communications as needed.
- Interns will draft daily reports, build press lists, gather media clips, do media analyses and research projects, pitch reporters, and copy-edit.
- Interns will assist with various communications- and team-related assignments and tasks as necessary.
- Interns will assist the THI senior team at various events to help manage our clients’ needs, including a press conference, one-on-one interviews, marching in a parade in NYC, business events across NYC and in other locations, etc.
Essential Skills
- Must have strong organizational skills and be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize and multitask to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Must have strong writing abilities and quickly write clear and persuasive copy.
- Must be proficient in using Google Suite products, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Must be able to work collaboratively with a team to meet group objectives.
- Must be able to communicate professionally with the press, community contacts, government staff, and clients.
Requirements:
- Must be based in New York City for the internship program duration.
- Must have at least 20 hours a week of availability during normal business hours.
- Must be a Junior or Senior in college or a Graduate Student.
- Must be able to attend evening and weekend events as needed.
- Must be comfortable working in various settings that include an office environment, at high-profile events, and most importantly, the ability to work efficiently in a remote environment.
- Must have a strong interest in news, politics, and current events.
- Must have access to a working cell phone, computer, and high-speed WiFi.
